The Earth's crustal plates move, generally along major faults, and this leads to earthquakes.

Some regions are more earthquake-prone than others.

Earthquake-prone regions:
Central and Northern California [San Andreas fault, S. F. Bay Area], El Centro, New Madrid [Ohio], Alaska [Turnagain], Turkey, Iran, China, Coastal Peru.
