RECHARGE AND DISCHARGE

  • Groundwater is recharged upstream (through percolation in uplands) and naturally discharged downstream (at springs and/or as baseflow of perennial rivers).

  • Groundwater pumping amounts to artificial discharge.

  • Lowering of the groundwater table due to pumping can lead to negative impacts on riparian vegetation and neighboring wetlands.
