VICTOR M. PONCE

FIVE-YEAR POST-TENURE REVIEW

2009-2013 - March 2014

I. TEACHING EFFECTIVENESS

A. TEACHING LOAD/CONTRIBUTION

Over the past five (5) years of the evaluation period, Prof. Ponce has taught the following following nine (9) courses:

  1. CIV E 401 Civil Engineering and Society
  2. CIV E 445 Applied Hydraulics
  3. CIV E 445 Applied Hydrology
  4. CIV E 530 Open-channel Hydraulics
  5. CIV E 632 Computational Hydraulics and Hydrology
  6. CIV E 633 Environmental Hydrology
  7. CIV E 634 Surface-water Hydrology
  8. CIV E 638 Sedimentation Engineering
  9. CIV E 696 Advanced Topics in Water Resources

In the past five (5) years, Dr. Ponce has taught a total of 31 classes in ten (10) semesters, an average of 3.1 classes per semester. Dr. Ponce's teaching load is three (3) courses per semester, amounting to a total of six (6) courses per year. The number of class preparations is three (3) per semester. Dr. Ponce's teaching load [six (6) courses per year] is consistently higher-than-average for the Civil Engineering department, where the average teaching load per faculty member over the past five (5) years has been four (4) courses per year. Additionally, the record shows that Dr. Ponce has taught nine (9) different courses in the past five (5) years, a large number of courses by any metric.

B. NEW COURSE TAUGHT

  1. CIV E 696, Advances Topics in Water Resources, taught Fall 2013 together with Dr. Luis Parra. This is a new graduate course designed to expose water resources graduate students to the subjects of stochastic hydrology, hydromodification and online script development related to civil engineering.
C. TEACHING INNOVATIONS

  1. Since 2009, Dr. Ponce has developed an online video capability in his Visualab. A total of U.S. $30,000 have been invested in the development of this capability, including hardware and software. The hardware includes several servers to support the Visualab's extensive online activities, video and still cameras, and ancillary equipment, including teleprompter, tripod, and studio lights. The software includes Final Cut Pro for professional video editing, Squeeze for video compression, Xilisoft for video format conversion, Adobe Creative Suite 6 (CS6), and Ikan teleprompter software.

  2. In the past five (5) years, Dr. Ponce's Visualab has developed more than two-hundred (200) online videos to support the teaching of CIV E 445 Applied Hydrology and CIV E 530 Open-Channel Hydraulics online (ponce.sdsu.edu/videos2x.php), and other instructional and service applications. These videos are streamed by two Visualab media servers and posted on YouTube, for worldwide reach.

  3. Developed more than one-hundred (100) online scripts to perform hydrologic and hydraulic calculations, using the scripting language PHP (onlinecalc.sdsu.edu). These online tools are being used in CIV E 445 Applied Hydrology and CIV E 530 Open-channel Hydraulics. The Visualab's scripts are a unique resource being used on a worldwide basis.

  4. Maintained an extensive website for teaching, research, professional and service purposes (ponce.sdsu.edu). The website, among the largest individual academic websites anywhere, featuring more than 12,000 links, is used for communications with students, colleagues, correspondents, and the public at-large, with worldwide reach.

D. THESIS CHAIR, IN PROGRESS OR COMPLETED DURING 2009-2013
