Tropical rainforests have very well developed food chains, which completely and effectively burn
[biodegrade] organic matter,
releasing carbon dioxide and water as a byproduct.
Therefore, tropical rainforests are not very good sinks for carbon.
The Amazon rainforest is not going to help sequester excess carbon now in the atmosphere.
Only temperate and other mesic forests can sequester carbon [Positive Net Production].
Thus, it is very important to conserve temperate and mesic forests.
