The type of ecosystem is closely related to the prevailing climate.

The prevailing climate depends on mean annual precipitation, latitude, altitude, and relative continental position, to name the most important.

Major ecosystems are the temperate forests, boreal forests, tropical rain forests, deserts, coral reefs, and tundra.

Production is the biomass (tons/yr of dry matter) generated by an ecosystem through photosynthesis.

Consumption is the biomass (tons/yr) used by an ecosystem through the respiration of plant roots and animals.

The difference between Production and Consumption is Net Production
[NP = P - C]
