TSUNAMI CASE STUDY

The June 21, 2001 earthquake-generated tsunami in Camana, Peru, damaged a 20-km long stretch of coastline.

Over 2000 structures were damaged or destroyed. 22 people were killed, and 62 were reported missing.

Damage was concentrated along a flat coastal beach no higher than 5 m above sea level. The waves were 5 to 7 m high and penetrated 1 km inland.

The drawdown (retreat of the water) associated with the tsunami was about 5 m and lasted 15 minutes.
