Causes

Sediments originate in the lithosphere by weathering and other natural processes, and are entrained in the hydrosphere [carried out by running water].

There is natural erosion and accelerated, or anthropogenic, erosion.

Accelerated erosion can be several orders or magnitude greater than natural erosion.

Accelerated erosion is caused by desertification, deforestation, overgrazing, agriculture, and urban development.
