Coquillo
STRATEGIES FOR THE OJOS NEGROS VALLEY

  • Affected producers

The extent of the infestation in affected parcels is estimated to vary from 10 to 30 percent. Parcels affected are shown in Fig. 1.

  • Field observations

    • The infestation with coquillo is moderate to severe.

    • Yellow nutsedge tends to be the predominant species.

    • The coquillo weed infests irrigated parcels which grow vegetables.

    • The presence of coquillo is related to irrigation; where there is no irrigation, there is no coquillo.

    • The infested parcels tend to be adjacent to the packing plants.

    • The rotation to alfalfa and other tall grasses shades the coquillo, inhibiting its growth and providing weed control.

  • Control strategies

    • Coquillo is a weed that thrives in irrigated lands and is difficult to kill by mechanical or chemical means.

    • A positive use of the coquillo tubers is as food for animals and humans. The tubers have been used as pig feed, and for feeding wildlife such as cranes and wild turkeys.

    • The marketing of the coquillo tubers for the preparation of the horchata drink has some potential.
