Experience and Qualifications

  1. Victor Miguel Ponce, principal investigator, hydrologist, professor of civil and environmental engineering, San Diego State University. Dr. Ponce has 20 years of experience in surface and groundwater hydrology, environmental hydrology, and hydroecology. His experience encompasses the United States, Mexico, Latin America, and Asia, in teaching, research, consulting, and service. Dr. Ponce is particularly qualified to direct this research project, since he has recently completed (June 2006) an interdisciplinary reference study of the impact of the proposed Campo landfill on the hydrology of the Tierra del Sol watershed (http://tierradelsol.sdsu.edu). In this report, Dr. Ponce delineates the impact of the proposed landfill project on the hydrology, hydrogeology, hydroecology, stream morphology, and groundwater hydraulics of the Tierra del Sol subsurface and surface watersheds. Digital image manipulation using NDVI (Normalized-Difference Vegetation Index), a feature of ERMapper software, allowed a clear delineation of the various lineaments in Tierra del Sol.

  2. Dr. Julio Valdes, co-principal investigator, geotechnical engineer, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, San Diego State University. Dr. Valdes' specialty is the flow of water through soil and rocks. Dr. Valdes will provide the required expertise in field measurement of soil moisture and related data acquisition systems, Dr. Valdes has 8 years of experience in geoenvironmental engineering and flow through soils, rocks and other porous media.
