RELATED TRAVEL AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS

During the summer 2007, Dr. Ponce visited the Central valley, in California, to learn first-hand about the salinity and drainage problems besetting this valley. He also visited the Wellton-Mohawk irrigation project, in Wellton, Arizona, to learn about its salinity management programs.

Dr. Ponce spent the Fall 2007 semester in Arequipa, Peru, performing field studies and becoming acquainted with the salinity and related geotechnical problems of the neighboring Vitor valley. On occasion, he guest-lectured in the civil engineering department at the Universidad Catolica de Santa Maria (UCSM), in Arequipa. He was instrumental in developing a cooperative agreement between SDSU and UCSM to carry out interdisciplinary research in the Vitor valley.
