SLIDE 2

Mud volcanoes differ in size and shape, and vary in level of activity.

Yet, they share a common purpose: to excrete solids, liquids, and gases originating several kilometers deep into the Earth's crust.

SLIDE 3

Mud volcanoes occur where heavier fractured rocks lie on top of lighter sedimentary saline formations.

Their activity may be affected by strong seismic motions.
