These mud volcanoes are close to the southeastern shore of the Salton Sea, near Niland, California.
They are a curiosity of Nature, always changing, never the same, and often loud.

Mud volcanoes differ in size and shape, and vary in level of activity.
Yet, they share a common purpose: to excrete solids, liquids, and gases originating several kilometers deep into the Earth's crust.

Mud volcanoes occur where heavier fractured rocks lie on top of lighter sedimentary saline formations.
Their activity may be affected by strong seismic motions.
