Reference: Mr. Timothy Johnson's application for admission, year 2011 TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: I am writing this letter in support of Mr. Timothy Johnson's application for admission into your program, for the 2011 cycle. I have known Mr. Johnson for nearly two years. He has taken two of my classes: CIVE444 Applied Hydrology, and CIVE401 Engineering and Society. Mr. Johnson was an outstanding student, earning an A in both classes. He always sat on the first row, distinguishing himself among his peers for his level of interest and dedication to learning. Mr. Johnson was always present in class and actively worked on the assigned homework and other tasks required of him. In CIVE401, all students were required to write a term paper on a topic chosen by the instructor. At the start of the semester, I announced that the best paper would be selected for online publication. Mr. Johnson's paper, entitled "The future of wind energy in California," was chosen as the best paper, and was subsequently published on the web. I have been teaching at SDSU for more than 30 years. During this time, I have had ample chance to interact and serve as mentor to generations of young people wishing to better themselves through education. Mr. Johnson is clearly among the very best students I have had the pleasure to work with. I would place him in the upper 1% percentile, based on his demonstrated record of performance, his ability to communicate effectively, and his overall demeanor as a student. I can think of no other student of his generation more meritorius of admission to your graduate program.
Sincerely yours,
Dr. Victor M. Ponce
