Dear Bonnie:

FLOR PEREZ MARTINEZ has been employed as a research assistant in my lab since August 25, 2003. Her current visa expires July 31, 2006. Ms. Perez is in charge of running specialized software which the typical students are not familiar with. In addition, she assists students on web-based engineering practice and helps me keep my website up-to-date with new developments.

Given the above, I would like to request a 2-year extension of her J-1 visa, through August 24, 2008, for a total duration of 5 years. I am currently undertaking several research projects and developing new research and web-based applications, and the extension is needed to continue the work. Ms. Perez is thoroughly familiar with our practices, having worked in the lab two-and-a-half years.

To assure her financial support while in the United States for academic study, I have awarded her room-and-board at my home at no cost. Room and board in San Diego amounts to $1000. Therefore, her annual income is $12,000.

Sincerely yours,

Victor M. Ponce
Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering
