1. INTRODUCTION Backcountry Against the Dump, Inc., hereafter "Backcountry," wishes to support the development of a document that addresses the issues of groundwater utilization and sustainability. The document will be used to assist in establishing the proper scientific basis to assess the interdisciplinary impacts of aquifer utilization. 2. SCOPE OF WORK Victor M. Ponce, hereafter "The Consultant," agrees to write a white paper on the topic "Groundwater utilization and sustainability," intended for general use. The document will explore the relationship between the exploitation of groundwater and the principle of sustainable development. Topics will include the origin of groundwater; its quantity, quality, and age; recharge and discharge; physical properties; types of aquifers and wells; groundwater utilization; groundwater depletion, including case studies; impacts of groundwater depletion; and sustainable yield. The document will be written in a tutorial style, with usage of graphs, and technical terms clearly defined and explained to facilitate understanding by reasonably informed readers. The target audience ranges from local stakeholders to decision-makers, including government officials and politicians. The length of the document will be approximately 15 pages, including graphs. 3. TIMELINE The Consultant agrees to deliver the product subject of this agreement no later than December 31, 2005. 4. HONORARIUM The sole honorarium for the work subject of this agreement is $ 3,500. 5. PAYMENT SCHEDULE 50% at the start of the work, and 50% at the time of delivery of the completed product. 6. ASSIGNMENT OF COPYRIGHT
The Consultant retains the exclusive rights to the technical content of the document subject of this agreement,
and can publish the work in any form that he sees fit.
Backcountry can make fair use of the document, provided proper acknowledgement is made of the Consultant
as author of the document.
