Dear Sirs:
I am pleased to provide a letter of recommendation for Dr. Ziad Bayasi, who is applying for a Fulbright grant to travel to Syria and lecture there in the academic year 2006-07.
I have known Dr. Bayasi for 15 years, first in my capacity as chair of the civil engineering department, and later, as a colleague and friend. Dr. Bayasi has a keen interest in research in engineering materials, and has developed over a short period of 15 years an impressive record of accomplishments and publications in reputable journals.
Dr. Bayasi is planning to travel to Syria to spend a year helping a Syrian university come to speed in the areas of his expertise. This activity is to be encouraged, since Bayasi is a great teacher and a scholar.
Dr. Bayasi's absence is not likely to impact our program considerably. On the other hand, the experience that he gains in international education will strengthen his capabilities and enable him to be a more effective faculty member in the future.
Dr. Bayasi is a very personable individual. He is very respectful of other people's opinions, and has a great deal of cultural sensitivity. I recommend him very highly for this award.
